Spanish website AS features in the latest edition of our transfer bin series with the suggestion that Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku could be heading to the Bernabeu this summer as a replacement for Alvaro Morata.
The young Belgian has been linked with several moves away from Stamford Bridge this summer but the Real Madrid links don’t make a lot of sense for a variety of reasons.
Firstly, Lukaku has made it clear he wants to play regular football, which prompted talk of a Chelsea exit originally.
There’s no guarantee he’d get a great deal of game time under Carlo Ancelotti because of the presence of Karim Benzema up front, the option of Jese Rodriguez and the fact Cristiano Ronaldo can play through the middle.
Real Madrid have also been linked with a big money move for Monaco striker Radamel Falcao to go with an imminent move for fellow Colombian James Rodriguez from the same club.
If Real manage to sign Falcao then it would put him and Benzema ahead of Lukaku in the Real Madrid pecking order.
There have also been links this morning, which have suggested Jose Mourinho could be ready to offer Lukaku the chance to lead the Chelsea attack at various points in the coming season.
Diego Costa will be Chelsea’s primary forward and if Didier Drogba re-signs for the Blues, Lukaku will have two strikers similar to himself, who can make him a better player in West London.
Even if Lukaku stays with Chelsea, he’s likely to get more games under Mourinho than would be the case at Real Madrid. Therefore, it’s arguably better for him to stay put then it is for him to risk everything with a permanent move to Spain.
Morata’s decision to leave the club was influenced by the fact he wasn’t playing as much as he would have liked at Real Madrid, which makes it bizarre as to why Lukaku would then put himself in the same position.
Rubbish Rating: A loan move could be a good piece of business for all concerned but in permanent terms, based on what Lukaku has said in the recent past, it would be a huge surprise if the move happened.
