Spurs transfer news: First summer signing draws closer; defender rumours continue

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closing in on a move for Swansea City defender Ben Davies.

The Guardian reports that the defender will have a medical at White Hart Lane in the coming days, after a fee was agreed between the two clubs.

It is believed Spurs midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson could be moving in the opposite direction, which raises questions as to whether the previously reported £10million fee still applies.

Davies could prove to be the solution to Tottenham’s long-term issues at left-back, although Danny Rose may look to show he has what it takes in that position when the two players compete for a starting berth.

In other news, Spanish football journalist Graham Hunter has hinted to Talk Sport that Barcelona could move for Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen this summer.

Those rumours have been around for a while, and speaking on the radio station on Saturday, Hunter said, “Barcelona are very firmly on the record as saying they will buy at least two defender this summer; one out and out centre-half and one who can perform in multiple positions.”

Vertonghen certainly ticks the second box, but Spurs will surely do everything in their power to keep the 27-year-old at the club.
