Manchester United player Bebe has had a mixed few seasons. After initially being branded a flop after his surprise £7.4million move to Old Trafford back in 2010, he would ultimately become something of a hero in his homeland, with his exploits on loan at Pacos de Ferreira prompting calls for an unlikely World Cup call-up.
Alas that was not to be, but the now-24-year-old’s impressive recent form has seen him linked with a possible move to Primeira Liga champions Benfica.
In fact, such was the influx of rumours that some thought the deal would be done by now. But instead Bebe found himself on tour with United’s reserve-team.
Now Portuguese newspaper O Jogo has published fresh quotes from the player where he talks about his current situation and his hope for a welcome resolution.
“I confess I feel some anxiety,” Bebe is quoted as saying, “because I want to start working with my new club as soon as possible.
“I don’t know if there are any more interested. I guess it’s just Benfica. For now I will continue to train with the B team of Manchester United.”
There are no subtle suggestions or avoidance of the truth there, then. Bebe has mentioned Benfica by name and it seems he wants the move done as soon as possible.
Having scored 14 times on loan for Pacos last season, the league champions know what they would be getting. But it will be interesting to see if they are willing to pay what United are asking, for a player who is likely to be on considerable wages at Old Trafford despite failing to make his mark there.
