The 19-year-old became the fourth most expensive defender ever, and the most expensive teenager in history when he completed his £2 million move to Manchester United last month.
And big things are expected of the youngster who was arguably the most impressive full-back in the Premier League last season whilst playing for Southampton.
Former United star Denis Irwin was an influential figure for United in his 12-year stint at the club. Between 1990-2002 Irwin dominated the left-back position and made 529 appearances for the club, a stat he believes young Shaw has the potential to emulate.
The former Republic of Ireland international told the Sky Sports: "He is going to be a fantastic signing for years to come. He showed he has great pace for England at the World Cup and in the warm-up games.
"He has always been great going forward, we have seen that in the Premier League. There was talk of Chelsea being in for him so I am delighted that he signed for United.
"He is a fantastic player, who will improve and get stronger."
Quite often when a player moves for such a huge transfer fee there can be a significant amount of pressure on that player to perform, and thus the pressure causes them to under perform. You only have to look at the signing of Marouane Fellaini last summer to see that statement proved true.
However Irwin doesn't think Shaw's fee will have any impact on his ability to perform to the high standards that is expected of a Manchester United player.
The 48-year-old added: "As a young lad, you don't feel the pressure as much as older players.
"Market forces dictate what you have to pay for players. But he has been playing in the Premier League for the last two years with Southampton.
"He is a strong lad for a 19-year-old. He has great pace, great going forward. He is still only young. He will make mistakes defensively. We have to accept that, but he is a fantastic player."
With Patrice Evra reportedly nearing a move to Italian champions Juventus, Shaw is expected to be United's first choice left-back for the forthcoming season.
United fans will get their first glimpse of Shaw, and new Spanish central midfield player Ander Herrera, when they take on LA Galaxy on Thursday. The match will be the first of four pre-season friendlies they will play while on tour in the US.
