Pre-season is now well under way ahead of the new season with further matches this weekend and next week.
The transfer rumour mill also continues to spin round at a rapid pace, producing some exciting stories and tipping big deals as teams look to improve their squads ahead of the new campaign.
We’ve decided to take a look back on this day last year to see which stories were grabbing the headlines.
‘Mourinho rules out Mata and Luiz exits’
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho ruled out Stamford Bridge exits for midfielder Juan Mata and centre-back David Luiz.
Both players were linked with part exchange deals, which could have seen Wayne Rooney heading in the opposite direction.
“No chance. No chance. I am not going to contact them based on news that is not true and that they know that it is not true, because I told them they are very important for me,” said Mourinho.
‘Suarez wants to join Arsenal’
The Mirror also ran a report claiming Luis Suarez was ready to tell Liverpool that he wanted to join Arsenal.
The Uruguayan striker was the subject of two offers from Arsenal, but Liverpool stood firm and kept him at Anfield.
He was sold for £75 million in a transfer to Barcelona after picking up a four month ban for a biting offence at the World Cup.
‘United confident over Fabregas deal’
The Mirror claimed that Manchester United were confident that Cesc Fabregas would make a move from Barcelona to Old Trafford.
David Moyes saw a bid for the Spaniard rejected as he continued looking at ways to improve his midfield.
Fabregas stayed put, eventually moving to Chelsea in a £25 million deal this summer.
