Liverpool midfielder Emre Can was withdrawn just 20 minutes into his debut for the Reds against Preston North End on Saturday.
The former Bayer Leverkusen player was taken off injured, with the Daily Mail reporting that it could be a recurrence of a minor ankle problem.
It is that problem that ruled him out of Liverpool’s last friendly against Danish side Brondby. And while the 20-year-old was passed fit for the game at Deepdale, he has now been struck down by the same problem.
Both Can and Ricke Lambert were making their first starts for the club, but in the case of the younger of the two it was little more than a cameo performance.
Big things are expected of the former Bayern Munich midfielder, who arrived at Anfield for a reported £9.8million. And while there is no suggestion at this stage that his injury is serious, Brendan Rodgers may use him sparingly until he can be certain the injury is well and truly behind him.
