Spanish newspaper El Confidencial claims Diego Simeone has a plan to prevent Joao Miranda leaving for Chelsea this summer.
Chelsea have already taken three of Atletico’s title winning players from last season with Jose Mourinho recalling Thibaut Courtois while buying striker Diego Costa and left-back Filipe Luis.
Miranda has been freshly linked as a defensive addition to Mourinho’s squad, but El Confidencial claims Simeone will do his utmost to convince Miranda that he doesn’t need to leave the club.
“Simeone will try and convince that Atletico will return to fight for everything,” reports Ruben Rodriguez.
Simeone is in an extremely difficult position because his team, which was so successful last season, is falling apart in front of him.
He’s lost key players in all areas of his team, which makes it paramount that he stops anyone else from leaving this summer, which would further weaken his side’s chances of retaining the La Liga title.
If Chelsea’s reported interest in Miranda is accurate, the Blues won’t have a problem in terms of financially being able to pull off a deal.
However, what they can’t do anything about is the passion and belief that Simeone instils in his players and in this case he could argue that Miranda will be one of Atleti’s most important players next season.
Considering the 29-year-old announced a desire to leave last month, if Simeone could talk him into staying, it would be a remarkable tribute to the Argentine’s man management skills and ability.
It’s also questionable whether Chelsea really need to sign Miranda considering the defensive options available to them.
Chelsea have plenty of options in the middle of defence with Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry likely to be the main players this season, with Tomas Kalas and Kurt Zouma good young options, the club already owns.
In short, it could be a lot of effort and £20 million for a player that Chelsea don’t really need.
