Filipe Luis is 28 years of age and is arguably at the peak of his footballing abilities, but the Brazil international defender still wants to grow.
And, the left-back claims, he will be aided in his development at his new club Chelsea by Diego Costa.
‘If Diego isn’t already the best number nine in the world, he will be very soon’, he told the Blues’ official website. ‘He’s a brilliant player with a big heart. I’m very happy he’s here with me because he’ll help me grow as a Chelsea player’.
Both were in great form under coach Diego Simeone in 2013-14, but while Luis was not selected in Brazil’s 23-man World Cup squad, Costa failed to make any impact for Spain in Brazil.
That led to many football followers wondering whether the 25-year-old Brazilian-born striker will prove to be a one-season wonder. After all, he had come to the fore only in the last 18 months.
However, Luis would know more about Costa than most, having played alongside the former Real Valladolid star at Atletico, and his encouraging words should convince the Blues fans that the club have indeed signed a top-class striker.
Costa scored 36 goals in 52 matches in all competitions for Atletico last season and is one of the best strikers in the world at the moment. Manager Jose Mourinho has not splashed out a reported £32 million for nothing.
