Chelsea fans probably thought that Didier Drogba’s last piece of action for the club was scoring the winning penalty in the Champions League final in 2012.
That summer the Ivory Coast international left Stamford Bridge for Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua, but there are now reports claiming that the veteran striker could return to the London club.
According to Sky Sports, Chelsea are interested in signing the 36-year-old possibly as a player-coach, and the player himself is believed to be ‘leaning towards’ a move back to his former team.
Drogba is a footballing legend and is one of the greatest ever players to have featured for Chelsea.
Signed from Marseille in the summer of 2004 for £24 million, the former Guingamp star went on to win the Premier League three times, the FA Cup on four occasions and the Champions League once among other trophies.
Drogba also forged a strong relationship with manager Jose Mourinho, who returned to Chelsea for his second spell at the club last summer but failed to guide them to any major trophy success in the 2013-14 season.
Chelsea fans have largely reacted positively to the reports of a return of Drogba, who is currently a free agent after leaving Galatasaray at the end of last season, and here is a selection of their tweets.
Rumours of #Drogba returning to Chelsea! I would love to see him terrorise Arsenal one more time and he could mentor Lukaku, into a mini him— Shane Clifford (@ShaneClifford_) July 18, 2014
#Drogba linked with a move to Chelsea? Come back as a coach, not a player. Keep your last touch of the ball as a Chelsea player priceless.— Wesley Myler (@WesleyMyler) July 18, 2014
I've always been against bringing players back regardless of how big of a legend u are! Didier your place in history is sealed #drogba— Ash (@AJP_est1989) July 18, 2014
