Two highly-rated Manchester United players will not be joining their teammates on tour this summer.
Manchester United announced their 25-man squad for their pre-season tour of the USA on Friday, and there were a number of notable omissions.
There was no place for Bebe, who is being strongly linked with a move to Benfica. Nor was there a place for Anderson, whose time at United could well be coming to an end.
But it was the absence of a number of younger players that had United fans asking the most questions.
After his outstanding debut against Hull City last season, many expected Wilson to be given chances at Old Trafford under new boss Louis van Gaal. So what better time to impress him than during pre-season, when every player will be looking to show what they can do?
Similarly, Powell is fresh from a hugely successful loan spell at Wigan Athletic, and many United fans feel he is considerably better than most of United’s current midfield options.
Talk is that Powell will spend another season on loan (this time in the top flight), which could also be the case for the likes of Lawrence and Janko. But there is a good argument to be had that Powell deserves a chance in United’s squad now.
Similarly, while it is great to see Will Keane back in the first-team fold, there is no reason why Wilson could not have joined him for the tour.
Instead, United’s nearly-men will remain at home, hoping their time will come at a club where everyone knows they are now playing for their future.
