What next for Coutinho if the latest Liverpool rumour is true?

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Real Madrid player Isco.

Liverpool are considering a move for Real Madrid midfielder Isco according to a report from Goal.

It is being claimed the Spaniard may be surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu, with James Rodriguez being tipped to follow Toni Kroos to Madrid. But if Liverpool do move for Isco – and it is a big if – what would that mean for Philippe Coutinho.

The Brazilian play-maker is blossoming into one of the Reds’ standout players. But if Isco were to arrive at Anfield it would prompt questions as to how exactly Brendan Rodgers could get the best out of both 22-year-olds.

Isco plays predominantly as an attacking midfielder, although he can also play on either flank when required. That is arguably a mirror image of Coutinho, and while Liverpool will need strength-in-depth as they look to compete in four major competitions next season, Isco’s arrival could cause as many problems as it solves.

Coutinho made 37 appearances for Liverpool last season, scoring five goals and setting up a further eight. In comparison, Isco made 53 appearances, scoring 11 and setting up an additional nine.

While the latter is undoubtedly talented, Coutinho has the potential to become every bit as effective; and following the arrival of Adam Lallana and considering the versatility of Emre Can, surely Rodgers’ focus should now be on signing an out-and-out striker and ensuring strength and quality in defensive positions.
