Here's what Manchester United's team could look like next season based on current players and potential signings.
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has been officially presented to the media and he’s wasted no time getting to work at his new club.
Van Gaal has confirmed he’ll take a look at the squad in pre-season before deciding if he wants Old Trafford officials to push on and make new signings before the start of the season.
Here’s the side van Gaal could take into the new campaign.
GK – David De Gea
De Gea’s position at the club is safe. It would be remarkable if anyone else started in goal.
RB – Phil Jones
Jones has the versatility to play as a right-back or a right sided centre-back. That should see him start in the team.
CB – Mats Hummels
There’s plenty of talk that United will make a £20 million play to sign the Borussia Dortmund star. It would be a superb signing if they pulled it off.
CB – Thomas Vermaelen
Reports this week have suggested United are ready to up their initial £6 million offer for Arsenal’s captain.
LB – Luke Shaw
Shaw is a player van Gaal said he liked yesterday, which is why he commissioned the club to do a deal for the former Southampton player.
RM – Antonio Valencia
Valencia’s pace and work rate from the right hand side seem to have prompted van Gaal’s approval over a recent new contract, he starts.
CM – Marouane Fellaini
If Fellaini isn’t sold and if United don’t sign a holding player, LvG could use the Belgian to protect his back four.
CM – Ander Herrera
Herrera is also a player that van Gaal has admitted was on a shortlist of players he approved of. He’ll be under pressure to control games in the middle of the team.
AM – Juan Mata
Mata has the ability to be one of the best number tens in the Premier League. He should be aiming to dominate in that number ten role.
LM – Wayne Rooney
Rooney may have to adapt to a different role or position if he wants regular game time and that could mean starting most games on the left hand side.
ST – Robin van Persie
Van Persie was van Gaal’s main man in attack for the Netherlands and he should start up front for United when they take on Swansea City.
