Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski wasted little time before sending his best wishes to his now-former Germany teammate Philipp Lahm.
The Bayern Munich player announced his retirement from the international stage shortly after guiding his side to World Cup triumph in Brazil.
The news has come as a shock to many, including the German FA's president Wolfgang Niersbach who told the BBC, "Philipp called me this morning and personally informed me of this step. I very quickly realised that it was pointless trying to persuade him to reconsider his position."
Following the news, Arsenal's Podolski posted a picture of him and Lahm savouring their recent triumph, along with the following message:
'Respect Philipp. Will always remember the big moments that we shared - for Germany and Bayern'.
Both men will soon be focusing on their club duties once more. But for now they can enjoy their World Cup victory; and for Lahm, there is surely no better way to bow out for his country than that.
