With Chelsea completing the £16 million signing of Atletico Madrid’s Filipe Luis, the Brazilian was all smiles when pictured putting the finishing touches to his contract on the club’s official Twitter page.
Signing a three-year deal, the left-back is set to wear the number five shirt at Stamford Bridge, as he bids to replace long-term option Ashley Cole, who departed for Roma this summer after eight seasons with the club.
An integral part of Atletico’s 2013-14 title-winning campaign and run to the Champions League final, Luis leaves the La Liga side having made 127 appearances since arriving from Deportivo La Coruna in 2010, establishing a reputation as one of the top defenders in Spain over the past few seasons.
The 28-year-old becomes the second Atletico player to make the move to Chelsea this summer, after Diego Costa’s £35m transfer earlier this month, while goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also returns from a loan spell in the Spanish capital.
Having earned four international caps for Brazil since his debut in 2009, Luis failed to make the squad for the 2014 but, if he impresses with Chelsea as expected, then he is sure to win more international honours in the future.
