On this day: Moyes's Fabregas struggles and Higuain's Chelsea hint

Stories involving Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United all feature.

Louis van Gal wasted no time in ruffling feathers in his first news conference as Manchester United manager yesterday.

LvG claimed United to be the number one team in England, which is a big statement considering they finished seventh last season.

Fans across the world are talking about his comments this morning, but we’ve taken a look back to this day last year to see what was making the headlines.

‘Moyes could struggle to attract star’

The Independent claimed that David Moyes faced a struggle if he wanted to sign Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona.

United made a confirmed offer but there was nothing from Barca which suggested that a deal was possible.

United weren’t able to do a deal as Marouane Fellaini became the club’s only big money signing on the final day of the transfer window.

‘Higuain drops Chelsea hint’

Gonzalo Higuain dropped a hint that Jose Mourinho wanted him to move to Stamford Bridge.

The ex-Real Madrid man was linked with several moves away from Los Blancos last summer, eventually settling at Napoli in Serie A.

Higuain worked with Mourinho when the pair were both at Real Madrid in Spain.

‘Wenger told to return with a ‘drastic’ bid’

Arsenal had seen a £30 million bid for Luis Suarez rejected and Liverpool told the Gunners to severely up the ante if they wanted the Uruguayan forward.

Arsenal went on to make a bid of £40 million and £1, as they aimed to trigger the buy-out clause in Suarez’s previous Liverpool deal.

Liverpool owner John Henry has since admitted that the Gunners were successful but his club ignored the clause and kept Suarez at the club.
