Wisdom 'learned a lot' during Derby County loan spell

Andre Wisdom

Andre Wisdom spent last season on loan from Liverpool at Derby County, but has returned to Merseyside for pre-season with more first team experience under his belt.

Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom sad he learned a lot during his loan spell at Derby County last season.

Wisdom has returned to the club this summer and has been linked with another loan move away from the club, with West Bromwich Albion reported to be interested in the player, who can play both right-back and centre-back.

He has already made 22 first team appearances for Liverpool, but got even more match experience in the Championship at Pride Park.

The 21-year-old told the Liverpool website: "I really enjoyed the loan at Derby. I learned a lot and it was a good experience, and I'm glad I'm back and I'm training well and trying to get my fitness back to its peak.

"Derby was really good for me because I played in all of their games - I think about 35 or 36 games in total. It was good to find a consistency in playing and the lads there helped me a lot.

"Derby have a good style of play and they like to pass the ball. In the Championship there are a lot of long balls and it's very physical, but Derby have some good players and I learned a lot about the tactical and positional side of my game.

"It was really good and I wish Derby all the best for the new season. We did really well last season when we got to the play-off final at Wembley and we lost in the final, but it was a good experience."

Several Liverpool fans have been impressed by Wisdom when he has appeared for the side by his power, and seemingly good understanding of the game for a player of such a young age.

Whilst some may regard his running style as a little odd, and probably don't regard him as the most graceful footballer to watch he seemed to get the job done.

Given the links there have been with defenders so far during this transfer window, and the amount that are already ahead of Wisdom in the pecking order, it is unlikely he will feature much for the first team for the Reds this time around - though there is a need for a bigger squad at Anfield this season given the side's return to Champions League action.

There could be room for him to play at right-back next season. It look as though Glen Johnson will stay at the club despite entering the final year of his contract, even though his form has been underwhelming, and Jon Flanagan who kicked on last season. Both of those players can play left-back, and if injuries strike in the defence, Wisdom could be a useful player to have around the squad.
