Manchester United are looking for defenders and McGrath hopes Vlaar is on the list of targets.
Former Manchester United defender Paul McGrath has said that Aston Villa centre-back Ron Vlaar could be a suitable candidate to fill the void left by Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at the heart of their defence.
Vlaar had an impressive World Cup for the Netherlands as they finished third in Brazil, and understood what was required from manager Louis van Gaal.
Van Gaal was unveiled as Manchester United boss yesterday, and signing defenders seem to be pretty high on the Dutchman's list, with Arsenal's Thomas Vermalen amongst those linked with a move to Old Trafford.
“With Luke Shaw coming in, it’s going to be a very young and inexperienced defence. I’m hoping he’ll bring in a good experienced defender. Rob Vlaar would be on that list.”
It would be a big step up for Vlaar from a side that was looking over their shoulders at one stage last season with the potential fear of being relegated. For him to go to a side that is rebuilding, but still has many players who are used to winning, and fans who expect to see some tangible progression in the season ahead could be a bit of a culture shock.
However, he would know what to expect from van Gaal, and he would be a relatively safe option if he were to recruit the 29-year-old as a result, given that he has also worked with him during his younger days AZ Alkmaar.
