Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is well known for not spending loads of money in transfer windows.
However, things seem to be changing as the North London club have already made two major signings so far this summer.
Barcelona were paid a reported £30 million for the services of Chile international forward Alexis Sanchez, while Newcastle United were given a reported £12m as transfer fee for right-back Mathieu Debuchy.
While 25-year-old Sanchez’s exact position in the starting line-up has yet to be determined, France international Debuchy is expected to replace the departed Bacary Sagna at right-back.
The two deals have delighted the Arsenal fans, and with the summer transfer window still quite early, a few more signings are still expected at the Emirates Stadium.
Former Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur striker Gary Lineker took to social media site Twitter on Thursday to express his opinion on Wenger’s transfer activity so far.
Arsene Wenger has signed Debuchy. He's such a spendthrift these days.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) July 17, 2014
Of course, England legend Lineker knows that spending just over £40m during a summer transfer window does not make Wenger a ‘spendthrift’, but the Frenchman’s willing to splash the cash in order to sign the big-name players he needs is indeed something that will have amazed many.
