Yaya Toure says fan support convinced him to stay at Manchester City

Yaya Touré interview

Yaya Toure has said that the support from Manchester City's fans has convinced him to stay.

The Ivorian powerhouse was at the centre of a bizarre row involving a perceived lack of caring from the City hierarchy following Toure's birthday, and speculation raged that the midfielder was trying to engineer an exit in the close season.

Toure then criticised his club for not offering him compassionate leave to be with his family shortly before his brother, Ibrahim, passed away after losing a battle with cancer last month.

However, speaking to Sky Sports News, Toure, who was a driving force behind City's title win last term, slammed talk of him leaving as "rubbish" and said that he is staying out of respect for the club's supporters.

He said: "All the speculation [has been going on] but one thing is the fans have always been good with me and my family. I will always honour my contract, and to them I say, 'don't think about all the speculation'. I think for the fans it is a big pleasure for me to stay and enjoy next season.

"Yes, everything is fine now. When I said it there was a lot of speculation and it was quite disappointing, but you have to do something for the fans you know.

"The team is preparing well and we will try to [win the title] again next season. I have amazing fans and I can't do that to them, I always appreciate [the support].

"The speculation that [my agent] is trying to get more money from the club and there is always some rubbish, but to be honest, we never wanted to talk about the money. There are more important things than money. We have to respect, it is very important."

His agent Dimitri Seluk claimed that the relationship between the Toure camp and Manchester City was "fine" after a turbulent summer.

"Everything is fine," said Seluk. "Yaya will go to the training camp and he will go to New York with the club before playing next season. Everything is OK.

"He will stay in Manchester City and everything is OK and he will play this season. Next birthday they will celebrate together, everything is fine. He is going to get all the clubs interested in him."
