Transfer Bin: Chelsea and Liverpool linked with £20m Griezmann move

The Metro has linked Antoine Griezmann with unlikely moves to Chelsea and Liverpool.

The transfer rumour mill often gives fans the first snippets of information relating to key transfers at big clubs.

However, it can also be found guilty of producing less consistent rumours, which don’t add up and we’ve picked on the Metro as a good example for the latest in our Transfer Bin series.

This rumour relates to a Real Sociedad star, with the paper claiming that both Chelsea and Liverpool are interested in a £20 million deal for Antoine Griezmann.

The Frenchman is playing hard ball over a new contract with his current employers but the Chelsea and Liverpool links don’t add up for a number of reasons.

Jose Mourinho is showing a remarkable ability at Chelsea right now, to snap up key players and targets from beneath his rivals’ noses.

However, a move for Griezmann would be confusing for several reasons.

Firstly, he’s not a manager who likes to play with out and out wingers down either side of his team, preferring to make his midfield compact with the full-backs getting forward to provide the width.

Secondly, there is absolutely no way anyone other than Eden Hazard will be starting on the left next season and the Blues have two options already on the right; Andre Schurrle and Willian.

Hazard is one of the best players in the Premier League, Schurrle has just won the World Cup with Germany and Willian has a point to prove after an inconsistent first season in the Premier League and an indifferent World Cup.

Therefore, you could assume that Liverpool have the better chance of doing a deal.

That’s not the case. Liverpool’s deal for Lazar Markovic from Benfica means that Brendan Rodgers now has both sides of his midfield sorted.

Raheem Sterling will start on the right and Markovic will start on the left with both players capable of playing down the opposite side of the pitch.

Space could be created if Sterling is moved into a central position where he’s shown great potential but otherwise it would be £20 million better used elsewhere.

Rubbish Rating: While Griezmann would be a good signing for either side there is no physical need for him at either.
