QPR set to challenge United and Roma for Dutch defender

Queens Park Rangers are reportedly looking at signing Aston Villa's Dutch defender Ron Vlaar despite interest from Manchester United and AS Roma.

Harry Redknapp is keen to bolster his defence ahead of the new season following QPR's promotion back to the Premier League and is tracking Ron Vlaar as the club look set to miss out on Steven Caulker.

The Dutch centre-back impressed during the World Cup for Louis Van Gaal's Netherlands as the Oranje finished in third-place at the tournament, and Vlaar is now attracting plenty of interest.

AS Roma are thought to be keen on raiding the Premier League yet again for Vlaar, with Manchester United another club linked with a move because of the fact that Van Gaal is now at the helm.

Villa will be desperate to retain the services of their 29-year-old captain and will hope to convince him to sign a new contract at the club to end speculation of a move away.

Though QPR are reportedly now considering a bid as they look set to miss out on Steven Caulker, who is closing in on a move to Crystal Palace and The R's will hope a move to London could be enough to convince the Villa skipper to make the switch as an alternative to the Cardiff City defender.

Caulker played in all 38 Cardiff games last season but couldn't help the side avoid relegation despite scoring five goals during the campaign.

Vlaar made more tackles per game than the former Tottenham man, but it was the young Englishman who was more dominant in the air, and he also made more clearances per appearance.

A move for the Dutchman would certainly be a great signing for Redknapp, as his experience and leadership would undoubtedly improve the side, but with Villa desperate to hold on to him, and United and Roma also circling, Redknapp will need to produce something special to land the powerful centre-back.
