The Gunners’ skipper has been the subject of rumours he could be on his way out of the Emirates after becoming a peripheral figure at the club over the last 18 months, with his most likely destination seemingly Manchester United.
It is, therefore, a bizarre coincidence that the Belgian centre-back has been photographed on the beach with United striker and his predecessor as Arsenal captain, Robin van Persie.
Rumours have been rife that Thomas Vermaelen was the subject of a £6million offer from the Red Devils, which reports suggested the Gunners rejected. It is believed the North Londoners are holding out for £10million for the defender whose contract entered its final 12 months in June this year.
Vermaelen has found his access to the first-team blocked by the partnership of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny ever since he was dropped by manager Arsene Wenger in March 2013 after a string of underwhelming performances. Since then, Vermaelen has started just seven games for Arsenal in the Premier League last term, of which just two were wins.
The Gunners paid €12million for him in 2009 to sign him from Dutch champions Ajax, and he soon emerged as the Gunners’ most reliable defender, earning himself the captain’s armband when Robin van Persie left in the summer of 2012.
But now it appears the Belgian could be hopeful of re-joining his former teammate at Old Trafford and judging by the pair’s holiday snaps, that would make both very happy indeed.
