Has Michael Owen just made a U-turn on his Arsenal comment?

Former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen says that Arsenal can win the Premier League title, just days after ruling them out of a top-four finish.

Michael Owen has said that he is impressed with Arsenal’s summer signings so far and believes that they can challenge for the Premier League title.

Now, that should not come as a surprise. After all, in Alexis Sanchez, the Gunners have recruited a top-class forward who has won trophies at Colo-Colo, River Plate and Barcelona.

Then on Thursday, the North London club completed the signing of France international right-back Mathieu Debuchy from Owen’s former club Newcastle United.

The former Liverpool and Manchester United striker has expressed his admiration of the players that Arsenal have signed so far, and believes that Arsene Wenger’s side will fight for the title with the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool among others.

‘Arsenal making some very good signings’, the 34-year-old ex-Real Madrid star wrote on Sportlobster.com on Thursday. ‘Impossible to discount City, United, Liverpool, Arsenal or Chelsea for the title this season’.

What is interesting about Owen’s remarks is that just on Tuesday he claimed that Arsenal will not even make it to the top four of the Premier League in the 2014-15 campaign.

‘I have been really impressed with Arsenal’s signing of Sanchez’, he told talkSPORT. ‘They have been missing a bit of quality but [they’ll miss out]... In no particular order, my top four for next season would be Chelsea, Man City, Man United and Liverpool’.

Of course, it is difficult for Owen and any other football follower to predict the top four in the English top flight at the moment as clubs are still signing players, but it would still come as a surprise to many that the 34-year-old is including Liverpool in his list of title challengers.

The Merseyside outfit have lost their best player in Luis Suarez (who has left for Barcelona) and doubts remain on whether they can sign a direct replacement.

Perhaps manager Brendan Rodgers will build his attack around Daniel Sturridge, who in his one-and-a-half years at Anfield has proved that he has the potential to become a top striker.

Manchester City and Chelsea will probably start the season as the favourites to clinch the title, but with Louis van Gaal in charge, Manchester United are a force to be reckoned with.
