Following reports that Xabi Alonso could be set to join up with former boss Rafa Benitez at Napoli this summer, the Real Madrid midfielder’s agent has moved to quash claims that his client is leaving the Spanish capital.
Joining Real from Liverpool in August 2009 for around £30 million, the veteran was crucial towards his side’s Champions League-winning campaign this past season, despite missing the final through suspension, but the recent arrival of Toni Kroos has thrown his future at the club into serious doubt.
However, Alonso only signed a new two-year contract in January under Carlo Ancelotti, and his agent, Inaki Ibanez, maintains that he will remain with the La Liga side.
‘I want to deny rumours that there has been any contact with Napoli,’ he told EuropaCalcio.
‘They have never been in contact with us. I can assure you that Xabi will remain with Real Madrid.’
Brought to Liverpool by Benitez from Real Sociedad in 2004, Alonso played five seasons at Liverpool, winning his first Champions League medal in 2005, before a fall out with his manager saw him depart for the Spain after 210 appearances for the Premier League side.
However, the two are reported to have reconciled since, though whether his agent’s comments will ultimately hold true remain to be seen, with the transfer sagas surrounding fellow Real midfielders Sami Khedira and Angel Di Maria likely to play a big part in his future.
