While Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier has seemingly been priced out of a move to Newcastle the Toon could yet turn to former target Samuel Umtiti.
Newcastle United must decide whether to rekindle their interest in versatile defender Samuel Umtiti after Lyon manager Hubert Fournier admitted that the player was seeking a move away from the Ligue 1 side.
Umtiti will be a familiar face for some Tottenham Hotspur fans after scoring a sensational goal for Lyon in the Europa League in February 2013 that saw the White Hart Lane faithful stunned into silence.
Since then the defender has gone from strength to strength for Lyon but despite making steady progress with the Ligue 1 side, it would appear the Yaounde-born star is keen to take his career to the next level with a move away from Stade de Gerland.
Speaking in a club press conference, newly-installed manager Fournier admitted that the Umititi had been agitating for a summer move and could be granted his wish provided the right offer is made.
“Clément Grenier had requested a release if a club offered to give him an increase in his sporting career. Same for Samuel Umtiti,” he told reporters.
“The club has listened. But this is not desirable ... Sam is part of the workforce and I count on him for the future ...”
Despite Fournier’s protestations though, the reality remains that Umtiti looks increasingly likely to leave the club with the only question at this stage being whether Newcastle decide to rekindle their interest in the 20-year-old.
The Toon have already completed a deal for a new right-back in the former of Daryl Janmaat but there could be a hole in the centre of the Magpies’ defence should the club succeed in offloading the out-of-favour Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.
Saint Etienne have emerged as the favourites to sign the 25-year-old, who has been deemed surplus to requirements at St James’ Park.
