Catalan newspaper Sport has offered Manchester United hope over doing a deal for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels.
The pro-Barcelona newspaper has suggested the German defender is only a ‘plan B’ for Luis Enrique as he tries to close a deal for Valencia’s Jeremy Mathieu ahead of the new season.
“Hummels and Blind are the plan B for the centre of Barcelona,” reports Sport.
“Andoni Zubizaretta (Barca official) admitted on Wednesday that the club have a plan B in case he failed to secure the first choice central defenders – plan A is Mathieu and Marquinhos.”
United’s apparent interest in Hummels has been well publicised despite the fact the club is yet to make any sort of official bid for the BVB defender.
He’s highly rated and well valued by Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp and may even be made captain at the end of the coming season, as Seb Kehl has confirmed it will be his last with BVB.
The idea that Hummels is not a defensive priority for Barca plays into United’s hands if their interest in him is accurate.
With Louis van Gaal now moved into his Old Trafford office, United are in a position to act quickly which is important while Barcelona are trying to close a deal for Mathieu.
If United can cash in while Barca are unable to put their complete attention into trying to do a deal for Hummels, it works to United’s advantage.
However, it’s all speculation and hearsay until Hummels or BVB make a play, which suggests the defender is available.
Klopp has been forced to see two of his best players leave in consecutive season, which could prompt him to shut up shop for the fear of losing another.
Mario Gotze moved to Bayern Munich before Robert Lewandowski followed suit and he’ll want to avoid a repeat of what’s happening with Southampton and Atletico Madrid at the moment, with their positive squads from last season effectively falling apart.
It’s positive for United, but it certainly doesn’t mean Hummels is a certainty.
