New Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal was all smiles as he was pictured with Ryan Giggs and Ed Woodward outside Carrington.

Van Gaal arrived at the training ground to meet the United hierarchy, backroom staff and players today ahead of taking training for the first time.

United right-back Rafael seemed to hint that the hard work would start straight away under Van Gaal on Instagram, tagging a photo with the caption “Let's go two sessions.”

The Red Devils trained earlier this morning, but will have a second session later tonight under the guidance of their new manager.

The Dutchman has recently returned from the World Cup, where he guided Holland to a third placed finish and he will now have to immediately divert his attention to matters at Old Trafford.

The 62-year-old has been tasked with picking United up from their most disappointing Premier League campaign and helping them return to past glories.

Whether he will be able to win the title in his first season remains to be seen, but there is an expectation on him to make a better attempt at replacing Sir Alex Ferguson than David Moyes did and anything other than qualification for the Champions League will be considered a failure.

It is that pressure which appeared to cripple Moyes, that Van Gaal thrives under, though, and he already looks as if he is enjoying himself at United – smiling for photographs throughout the day.

Those smiles may be made even bigger if he can pull off the signing of reported signing Arturo Vidal. The Juventus midfielder’s future in Serie A remains uncertain although a deal to bring him to Old Trafford remains some way off.

For now, Van Gaal will be concentrating on the considerable talent he already has at his disposal and he will finally be able to see their abilities up close today.

The Dutchman is due to have his first press-conference at 3pm on Thursday and it will be interesting to gauge what he has witnessed after taking training for the first time.
