Siem de Jong has been speaking about how it feels to score his first goal in Newcastle United colours.
The 25-year-old arrived on a six-year deal from Ajax earlier this summer. And he did not take long to show the fans what he is capable of with a wonderful long-range strike in a pre-season friendly.
The goal was not enough to ensure a win, with the Magpies ultimately losing 2-1 to Oldham Athletic. But de Jong looked every inch the goal-scoring threat Alan Pardew knew he was signing.
In his 244 appearances for Ajax, de Jong scored 78 goals and set up a further 48, and speaking after the Oldham game, he seemed happy to get off the mark in England.
In an interview with ITV, the player said, “I was a bit lucky on the free-kick and I shot it pretty well in so it was a nice moment.”
However, he did not let his moment detract from the final score, adding, “We should have won this game so (it was a) bad result.”
Newcastle are likely to complete a number of additional signings prior to the new season kicking off, but de Jong could just go down as the best of them.
