Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Markovic signing - 'Hats off to Ian Ayre'

Liverpool finally confirmed a deal for Benfica's Lazar Markovic yesterday.

Liverpool finally completed a deal for winger Lazar Markovic from Benfica yesterday.

The 20-year-old arrives under a lot of pressure with a £20 million price tag and plenty of expectation on his shoulders, as Brendan Rodgers looks forward to an exciting Premier League season and Champions League campaign.

Markovic brings a great deal into the squad and solves a problematic left midfield position for the side, which should help to give the team more of a natural balance and shape.

“I am very happy that I have joined such a great club. I hope that I will fulfil the expectations of the supporters, coaches, players and all connected to the club. I have seen what the players are like, I have seen what the supporters are like, and I cannot wait to start playing here,” he told Liverpool’s website.

Rodgers confirmed he brought Markovic to the club because of the different attacking options he provides and because he’s a player who is always looking to make something happen.

In terms of current first team stars he’s similar to, Raheem Sterling creates a good comparison as they both have a lot of pace and both have the ability to make things happen whether that’s when Liverpool build pressure or on the counter attack.

“This is an exciting signing for us and one that improves our squad, in terms of attacking options, for the coming season - Lazar is flexible to play a number of positions, but I like the way he attacks games and is always positive and looking to make something happen,” added the boss.

Markovic stands a great chance of starting that first Premier League game against Southampton and it’s now down to the player to ensure he has a solid and consistent pre-season.

Here’s what Liverpool fans have made of the signing on Twitter.
