Chelsea fans react on Twitter to Filipe Luis deal - 'If a team beats you, sign their best players'

Stamford Bridge Inside

Chelsea have announced a deal to sign Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid subject to personal terms being agreed.

Chelsea have confirmed a deal to sign left-back Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid ahead of the defender agreeing personal terms with the Blues.

Jose Mourinho has been working hard over the summer to get a deal done for a replacement to Ashley Cole, who has left the club and will play his football for Serie A giants Roma next season.

Chelsea’s interest in Luis has been well documented, with several reports in the UK and Spanish press which suggest the interest has existed and talks have been taking place for a long time with various twists and turns reported along the way.

The fee of around £20 million has previously been criticised because of the Brazilian’s age, 28-years-old, which questions the value of the deal as he’s an older player compared to someone like Luke Shaw who the club were previously linked with.

His arrival has several knock on effects for the rest of his teammates, with Cesar Azpilicueta freed up to go and play on the right hand side, his natural side of the defence.

In terms of settling in for Luis, that’s made easier by the fact Thibaut Courtois and Diego Costa are already Chelsea players and both likely to feature prominently in Jose Mourinho’s first team next season.

Luis developed a successful relationship with both at Atletico Madrid as Diego Simeone’s team secured the La Liga title and also battled their way into the Champions League final against Real Madrid, only to lose in extra time.

The prospect of an attacking relationship with Eden Hazard down the left hand side is also a very exciting one for Chelsea fans and could see the Blues boast the best left sided attacking partnership in the Premier League next season.

Here’s what Chelsea fans have made of the news of a deal on Twitter.
