OKC's Kevin Durant features in the USA's World Cup squad.
USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo has put forward a list of the nineteen players from which the final World Cup roster of 12 will be chosen. The nineteen will be at the Las Vegas training camp on July 27.
Guards: DeMar DeRozan, Bradley Beal, Stephen Curry, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, Kyle Korver, Damian Lillard, Derrick Rose, Klay Thompson.
Forwards: Chandler, Parsons, Kevin Love, Anthony Davis, Andre Drummond, Kevin Durant, Kenneth Faried, Paul George, Blake Griffin, Gordon Hayward, DeMarcus Cousins.
Derrick Rose is part of the team despite only playing 10 NBA games this past season, and excitingly he is on course to make the final squad of and make his first competitive appearance since late November.
The pool of point guards narrowed slightly when fellow point guard Russell Westbrook recently withdrew himself from contention to recover from the knee surgery he had last December.
Spurs wing Kawhi Leonard and Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge have also taken themselves out of the selection process. Leonard’s withdrawal was simply to rest – he played right until the very end of the postseason with the spurs. No reason was given for Aldridge’s self-omission.
Team USA are usually stocked with wings so Leonard’s withdrawal, though disappointing, won’t come as a huge blow. The loss of Aldridge however will sting more. Even though USA can boast impressive bigs in DeMarcus Cousins, Blake Griffin, Anthony Davis and Kevin Love, Aldridge is unique; only Love can boast a jump shot as reliable as the Trailblazer, and he can’t match his athleticism.
John Wall’s name is conspicuous by its absence, especially because his Washington teammate made the cut, and because of Westbrooks withdrawal.
Raptors scorer Demar DeRozan and Mavericks wing Chandler Parsons are newcomers to Team USA.
The FIBA world cup is usually preserved by Team USA for the younger players. The more established stars – Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James, are expected to return to the squad for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
