Transfer Clock: 49 days until the Transfer Window closes, here are the big stories you need to know...

Arsene Wenger 'wants Manchester United players'

Arsenal are stalling on a deal to sell Thomas Vermaelen to Manchester United, aware they have nothing to gain from letting the Belgian go for a relatively small transfer fee. The Telegraph report that Arsene Wenger is only interested in a deal if he can sign 'players as well as cash', from the Red Devils. The paper speculates Chris Smalling is a player Wenger wants, having been interested in him from his Fulham days, while Tom Cleverley was linked earlier this summer. The speculation is not new, but explains the current status of United's pursuit of Vermaelen, and if Van Gaal is unwilling to let players go himself, then they may be unable to persuade the Gunners to sell.

Liverpool close on Lazar Markovic

Liverpool's signing of Lazar Markovic is imminent, with The Mirror one of many to report the Serbian will complete his transfer in the next 24 hours. Markovic has already arrived at Liverpool to undertake a medical, and the £20 million deal will become the Reds' fourth signing of the summer, after one season at Benfica.

Meanwhile Sevilla have confirmed the addition of Liverpool forward Iago Aspas on a year long loan after a disappointing first season at Anfield.

Arsenal to drop Khedira interest?

Arsenal could abandon interest in Sami Khedira less than 24 hours after reports in Spain claimed a deal was close. The Mirror report that the Gunners are put off by Khedira's wage demands of £150,000 per week plus bonuses, which would make him the highest paid player at the club. They cite Morgan Schneiderlin and Lars Bender as potential alternatives.

Newcastle close on double deal

Newcastle are nearing a deal to sign Daryl Janmaat and Emmanuel Riviere, report The Telegraph. Janmaat is due for a medical tomorrow, while Riviere is available for transfer from Monaco. The forward has been linked to Arsenal, Stoke and West Brom in recent days.

Chelsea expect to tie up Filipe Luis transfer

Chelsea are expected to complete a deal for left-back Filipe Luis this week. The Mail report that Jose Mourinho's side have agreed to pay the £20 million Atletico Madrid are demanding for the Brazilian defender. Luis has been training with Atletico's reserves after making his desire to follow Diego Costa to London clear. Luis would be Chelsea's fourth signing of the summer after Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Mario Pasalic.
