With the World Cup now over, attention has switched to pre-season friendly games this week and activity on the transfer market.
Premier League sides up and down the table are reportedly looking at ways to improve their sides, with some big money deals expected to be completed by the end of the week.
We’ve decided to take a look back in time to see what stories were making the headlines on this day last year.
‘Wenger hints Arsenal fans should expect a ‘spectacular’ signing’
Arsene Wenger defended himself from criticism in last summer’s transfer market and told fans he was working on a superb, big name signing before the close of the transfer window.
Arsenal failed in bids to sign Luis Suarez from Liverpool, which resulted in frustration from the club’s fans at not having a big name signing already in the bag by this time last year.
However, Arsenal went on to complete a deal for Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid on the final day of the transfer window.
“You want me to announce a spectacular signing but I can't. But we are working behind the scenes to strengthen the squad,” said the Frenchman.
‘Chelsea consider three huge deals’
Chelsea were being linked with three huge deals as Jose Mourinho began his second spell in charge of the club.
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, AS Roma star Daniele De Rossi and former Blues striker Didier Drogba were all linked with moves to Stamford Bridge.
Rooney was linked with several of Manchester United’s Premier League rivals last summer after Sir Alex Ferguson revealed he’d indicated he wanted to leave the club.
‘Liverpool ponder £20m bid for Bundesliga star’
Liverpool were linked with a £20 million move for Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri as Brendan Rodgers mulled over ways to improve his side ahead of the Premier League season.
That interest from the Reds has carried on through to this summer, but the Swiss was being eyed as a potential replacement for Luis Suarez.
Liverpool are yet to make any form of official move for Shaqiri who remains a Bayern player.
