Former Inter Milan midfielder Dejan Stankovic hails ex-Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic for his battling qualities.

Over the years, former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic must have heard many great things said and written about him.

But this is the first time that the centre-back has been likened to ‘Braveheart’.

‘Have you seen 'Braveheart'? I do not know how many times I said: 'Nema, think about your health', and how many times he split open his forehead or nose because he always throws it in, without thinking about it’, Dejan Stankovic told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Stankovic is currently the assistant coach of Italian club Udinese and played alongside Vidic for the Serbia national team between 2002 and 2011. The 35-year-old is also a former midfielder of Inter Milan, the club the defender joined earlier this summer.

Vidic played for United from 2006 until 2014, and did so with his heart on his sleeve, establishing himself as one of the best centre-backs in the world. At one point, the former Spartak Moscow star was the best central defender on the planet.

The former Red Star Belgrade man was a key figure in United’s success during the period he was at Old Trafford, winning the Premier League five times, the League Cup thrice and the Champions League once among other trophies.

Vidic made his decision to leave United back in February and a month later it was announced that he would be joining Inter. The Nerazzurri finished fifth in Serie A last season, but under coach Walter Mazzarri, the 2010 Champions League winners will be challenging for the Scudetto in 2014-15.
