Mesut Ozil may have found his World Cup role under-appreciated by many, but he has one particularly high profile admirer.
The German international was approached during his country's World Cup trophy presentation by UEFA president Michel Platini, who had singled him out to ask for his shirt.
It is why in the aftermath of Germany lifting the trophy, Ozil was the one player celebrating around the pitch without his shirt on.
Platini himself was one of football's great number 10s, helping France to win Euro '84, and would have a natural affinity with a player as skilful as Mesut Ozil playing in his position.
The Frenchman will have been particularly pleased to see Germany win the tournament, a representative of UEFA who he himself presides over.
Ozil is a player who took a lot of criticism in his homeland in the build-up to the tournament and even during, and while he did not have any standout individual moments, his contribution to the German cause as a starter in every game will go down in history along with the rest of his teammates.
