Several Barcelona academy products have made the move to England in recent years and Nottingham Forest are said to be landing the latest.
According to reports, the club are set to seal the signing of Barcelona Under-19 defender Roger Riera, whose contract with the Catalan giants was not extended this summer and is now on the hunt for a new side.
A highly-rated youngster, Riera has progressed from Barca’s famed La Masia to captain the club at every youth level, winning the inaugural UEFA Youth League with the team in April.
With Forest having recently made efforts to widen their scouting network in Spain, the 19-year-old centre-back would likely begin life with the side’s Under-21 team, as new boss Stuart Pearce starts to re-model his squad for his first season back at the club.
While comparison to past Barca products such as Gerard Pique may be a tad ambitious, Riera is certainly an intriguing prospect, who would arrive with an excellent youth pedigree, having been raised within one of the best setups in world football.
A solid, all-round centre-back, much like many of the past graduates of La Masia, his addition is an excellent low risk, potentially high reward signing for the Championship side, who are looking to improve upon last season’s 11th-place finish.
