League of Legends shuts down Skin Codes to combat scammers

Riot Games cut dodgy third-party resellers out of LoL

MOBA sensation League of Legends provides a wide variety of character skins which can commonly be purchased via the game. A number of promotional skins have also been handed out to LoL gamers over the years with redeemable codes.

As a result a third-party market emerged for the codes with some rarer skins going for as much as $1.000. Riot Games now maintain that many of the codes for sale are coming from scammers that may lead to gamers parting with money to receive nothing with no protection against the fraud.

In order to stop the LoL scammers Riot announced recently that all skin codes have been deactivated and that online payment processing companies had been advised to not "process fraudulent payments" from offending websites.

Any previously activated skins will remain on player accounts and Players that have not yet redeemed codes will be able to send a request to Player Support with proof of ownership to activate a skin up until July 23rd, after which time no further codes will be honoured.

LoL gamers what do you make of the news? Have you been affected by a scam? Do you agree with deactivating skin codes altogether?
