Brazil legend Cafu has backed Ashley Cole to be a success in Serie A, after the 33-year-old signed a two-year deal with Roma earlier this month.
Cole had left Chelsea after his contract expired at the end of the last season and, despite being offered a new deal with the Blues, chose to explore new opportunities abroad.
With Roma reportedly beating off interest from the likes of AC Milan, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool for his services, Cafu, who himself enjoyed six successful seasons in the Italian capital, believes the ex-England international has made the right decision and will be a great addition to the league.
‘Ashley Cole is a fantastic player and it’s a great opportunity that he’s going to have at Roma,’ he said.
‘It’s a very hospitable club and he’s going to love Italian football. He’s played for a while in the Premier League so I think that this transfer is going to be good for him.
‘Of course Serie A will make him improve, but he is already a great player and a responsible professional. I’m sure he will be a great signing.’
Cole, who started just 15 Premier League games last campaign, spent eight seasons with Chelsea following his controversial move from Arsenal in August 2006, winning the Premier League in 2010 and Champions League in 2012, as well as four FA Cups to add to the three he won with the Gunners.
With his deal worth a reported £38,000 per-week, with the option to be extended into a further season, the left-back will be hoping he can help Roma better 2013-14’s second place Serie A finish, with the club’s last Scuedetto coming in 2000-01, when Cafu was still a member of the side.
