Rumours emerged last night that Paris Saint-Germain are close to securing the signing of Angel Di Maria for around £50 million. Some sources claiming the player would have preferred a move to Manchester United, but PSG were able to get the deal over the line.
However, Manchester United fans shouldn’t despair too much, this transfer could open the window for them to sign current PSG winger Ezequiel Lavezzi for a knock-down price this summer.
Lavezzi may be 29 years old, but he still has blistering pace, an eye or goal and the direct style that could suit the Premier League perfectly. He could become a Manchester United player for around £15 million.
The Di Maria deal should see PSG have to sell off a couple of assets in order to balance the books and appease the Financial Fair Play restrictions set on them this season.
Lavezzi enjoyed his second season in Paris and although the first 12 months have been fairly quiet by the high standards he set at Napoli, he finally began to flourish under Laurent Blanc and his performances in 2014 have been nothing short of exceptional. His record speaks for itself, with seven of his nine league goals coming since the end of the January break.
Add to that goals and impressive displays against Bayer Leverkusen and Chelsea in the Champions League and Lavezzi finished the season as one of PSG’s best performers.
However, with Di Maria coming in for a huge fee, the formation likely to change, his place is under definite threat.
The Argentine would be a fantastic signing, he can play anywhere in the front line and he would add the pace and threat in the wide areas that United lacked so often last season under David Moyes.
Under Louis van Gaal, Lavezzi could play a similar role to that of Arjen Robben. If the Dutch coach even fancies playing the 5-3-2 as he has with Holland, Lavezzi has the ability to adapt like Dirk Kuyt and play as the left full-back.
Lavezzi could be a tremendous signing, and the sort of player Manchester United lacked so often last season. If PSG have to sell, United should act quickly to win his signature.
