Giving away medals after winning a match or a football tournament is not that uncommon, but probably Jose Mourinho throwing the Premier League winners’ medal and his blazer into the crowd at Stamford Bridge in 2006 is the most famous in recent times.
Robin van Persie did something similar on Saturday following the Netherlands’ victory over Brazil in the 2014 World Cup third-place playoff at the Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha in Brasília.
The Dutch got the better of the Selecao 3-0 with ease. Manchester United striker Van Persie put the Oranje ahead after just three minutes from the penalty spot.
Ajax star Daley Blind doubled the advantage of Louis van Gaal’s side 14 minutes later, and in injury time Georginio Wijnaldum completed the scoring.
It brought to an end the 2010 World Cup finalists’ campaign in Brazil as they finished third in the competition.
After the match, Van Persie gave his bronze medal and captain’s armband to a Dutch fan wearing an orange military outfit and a large hat, as shown in the video below:
The World Cup is over for Van Persie and Van Gaal, and the United duo will now set their sights on the 2014-15 season.
