Tottenham Hotspur linked Jeremy Mathieu failed to train with Valencia earlier today as he looks set to complete a move to La Liga giants Barcelona.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side were touted as a potential destination for the right-back but Barca appear to be closing on an agreement with Valencia, which will see the 30-year-old Frenchman help fill the void created through Carles Puyol’s decision not to play on next season.
“Jeremy Mathieu is increasingly closer to Barcelona – The French player, who does not suffer any injury, missed training on Sunday with the rest of his teammates, so it seems that his move to Barca will soon be a reality,” reports Sport.
The news won’t be a huge blow to Tottenham because Pochettino already has good options in the transfer market to bring in at left-back.
The club remain linked with a move for Swansea City defender Ben Davies, a younger player with more Premier League experience.
Tottenham also already own a player on the left side of central defence, that Barca have been linked with buying in the form of Jan Vertonghen.
There is also still a possibility that Tottenham could pull off a deal for Sporting Lisbon star Marcos Rojo, who has been one of the only players to impress at the World Cup in a frequently criticised Argentinian back four.
It’s unclear whether Mathieu’s decision not to train is out of direct protest to force through a move, but it does seem likely that he won’t be a Valencia player at the start of next season.
