Report - PSG win Di Maria race, United to focus on Vidal

A report from Spain suggests Manchester United have turned their back on any deal for Angel Di Maria.

Pro-Real Madrid news source AS has jumped all over a report from Chile, which claims Manchester United are to abandon any attempts to sign Angel Di Maria from Los Blancos.

Various reports have suggested that United have been working on a deal for the Argentine, but AS points out that Arturo Vidal is the preferred option for Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.

“Arturo Vidal’s agent has told Chilean newspaper ‘La Tercera’ that the Juventus player is close to joining Manchester United. La Tercera reported today that United have turned their attention to 40 million euro-valued Vidal as an alternative to Ángel Di María,” reports AS.

“It appears that PSG have won the race to land Di María, who will cost the French side a fee close to 60 million euros. Vidal’s acquisition will take United’s summer spending spree to 115 million euros.”

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville recently revealed that he still feels that his former employers need at least another three players to be competitive in the title race next season.

Two of those three signings relate to midfield with a necessity for a defensive midfielder and a wide man.

Di Maria would be a great capture for United because he can play down either flank, offering LvG different attacking options.

Vidal would still be a superb signing for United, but he doesn’t offer them a great deal different to what they already have.

When van Gaal gets the chance to physically assess his Manchester United side, he’ll have three players who are all capable of playing at the top of his midfield where Vidal is at his best; Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Shinji Kagawa.

In short, a deal for Vidal would be superb but it would still leave United possibly needing another two midfielders to come into the squad ahead of next season.
