The eyes of the football world will be on Brazil this evening as Germany and Argentina meet in the World Cup final.
It’s been a fantastic few weeks of football in Brazil and focus will quickly turn to domestic leagues and preparations for the new campaign after the game later on.
The transfer rumour mill continues to spin round, linking some very good players with Premier League arrivals and exits.
We’ve taken a look at the headlines on this day last year to see which stories had fans talking.
‘Gervinho set for Arsenal exit’
Former Arsenal wide man Gervinho was set for an exit from Arsenal according to the Mirror’s John Cross.
The Ivory Coast international struggled to make an impact during his time in North London, which led to his eventual move to AS Roma.
Juventus, Lyon and Marseille were also thought to be interested in signing him from the Gunners.
‘Chelsea favourites to sign Rooney’
The Mirror also claimed that Chelsea were the clear favourites to do a deal for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.
Rooney announced an apparent desire to leave the Old Trafford club at the end of Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season.
The Mirror claimed the saga would last the whole transfer window, but Rooney stayed at United, signing a bumper £300,000 per week deal under David Moyes.
‘Liverpool eye Xherdan Shaqiri move’
The Metro claimed Liverpool were considering a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri as an alternative to Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Mkhitaryan committed to a move to Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, meaning Brendan Rodgers missed out on one of his main transfer targets last summer.
The Swiss was touted as an alternative with the Reds still interested in doing a deal for him today according to some sources.
