The AS Monaco striker could be set to join Newcastle along with Remy Cabella in the next few days as the Magpies are reportedly closing in on both deals.
Alan Pardew has been desperate to add to his strike-force and Riviere would finally give the side some more firepower ahead of the new season, although at least one more striker is expected to be signed.
The 24-year-old has also been a target of West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City, but Newcastle look to have beaten their Premier League rivals to the signature of the Frenchman if the latest reports are to be believed..
Riviere scored ten goals in 30 Ligue 1 appearances last season and will look to score the goals to help Newcastle to better league position than their tenth-placed finish last season.

Riviere also got two assists in a successful season that saw him score his first-ever career hat-trick in Monaco's 4-1 win against Montpellier back in August.
Newcastle are also expected to announce the signing of Remy Cabella for an estimated £9.5 million and the two signings would undoubtedly strengthen the side ahead of the new campaign.
Riviere has been linked with Arsenal in the past and the Magpies will hope that he can make his mark on the Premier League after five seasons in France.
He has scored 45 goals with 30 assists in 158 Ligue 1 appearances and will want to see regular first-team action with a move to Newcastle.
