Joey Barton describes £24m Arsenal target as ‘top player’

Former Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton is impressed with Real Madrid star Sami Khedira, who has been linked with a summer move to Arsenal.

Arsenal made their first signing of the summer transfer window on Thursday, as they recruited Chile international forward Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona.

The signing may have delighted the Gunners supporters, but it failed to convince Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton.

The 31-year-old former Manchester City and Newcastle United player claimed that 25-year-old Sanchez is ‘’incredibly inconsistent’ and raised doubts on whether he is worth the £35 million that the North London club have reportedly paid for his services.

However, Barton has backed Arsenal’s reported pursuit of another World Cup star Sami Khedira.

The Real Madrid midfielder has been in impressive form for Germany and has been a key figure in Die Mannschaft’s progress to the final of the tournament.

Khedira’s best game of the World Cup was against Brazil in the semi-finals on Tuesday, which Joachim Low’s team won 7-1.

Barton was impressed with the former Stuttgart star’s performance against Brazil and has described him as a ‘top player’, backing him to shine at the Emirates Stadium if he makes the switch from the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

Khedira has just one year left on his current contract at Madrid and has reportedly turned down an extension. It has been reported that an offer of £24m could be enough for Arsenal to sign him.
