Arsenal made their first signing of the summer transfer window on Thursday, as they recruited Chile international forward Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona.
The 31-year-old former Manchester City and Newcastle United player claimed that 25-year-old Sanchez is ‘’incredibly inconsistent’ and raised doubts on whether he is worth the £35 million that the North London club have reportedly paid for his services.
Am I the only one not overly wetting my pants over Arsenal signing Sanchez? From what I've seen of him he is incredibly inconsistant.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) July 11, 2014
Yes, on his day he can light up a game. But as anyone who has watched Barca will tell you. His good games are as common as his bad.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) July 11, 2014
However, Barton has backed Arsenal’s reported pursuit of another World Cup star Sami Khedira.
The Real Madrid midfielder has been in impressive form for Germany and has been a key figure in Die Mannschaft’s progress to the final of the tournament.
Khedira’s best game of the World Cup was against Brazil in the semi-finals on Tuesday, which Joachim Low’s team won 7-1.

Barton was impressed with the former Stuttgart star’s performance against Brazil and has described him as a ‘top player’, backing him to shine at the Emirates Stadium if he makes the switch from the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.
Considering Khedira has not long returned from a serious knee injury, he was outstanding the other night against Brazil.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) July 12, 2014
He'd be some signing if Arsenal pulled it off. Then I wouldn't blame people from wetting their pants... #topplayer— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) July 12, 2014
Khedira has just one year left on his current contract at Madrid and has reportedly turned down an extension. It has been reported that an offer of £24m could be enough for Arsenal to sign him.
