According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Cesc Fabregas’s transfer from Barcelona to Chelsea did not see the Catalan club receive the full €33million-plus-add-ons transfer fee being reported.
The newspaper claims that while some of the Barcelona hierarchy are allegedly claiming the club will ultimately receive €36million for the midfielder, the true figure is actually €8million less.
The report claims this is due to two factors.
Firstly, they claim Arsenal were owed €3million from Fabregas’s earlier transfer to La Liga, money that will reportedly head from Stamford Bridge to the Emirates Stadium via the Nou Camp.
And secondly, Marca claims the player himself will receive €5million as something of a “going away present” after he opted to receive €1million-a-year for the duration of his contract for a lump sum at the time of his departure.
In light of this information, it appears despite Chelsea spending big on the 27-year-old, his former club will only actually pocket €28million.
Still, add that to the cash they have received from Arsenal for Alexis Sanchez and it is clear Barca are in the money this summer.
The only question is: Would they have been better keeping the players they had or spending wisely with the proceeds of their sales.
Only time will tell when, of course, Luis Suarez is able to kick a ball competitively once more.
