1) Two to arrive at Newcastle
Newcastle United are confident of completing the capture of AS Monaco forward Emmanuel Rivière, whilst they are also set to make a second offer for Daryl Janmaat.
The signing of Rivière would finally put an end to Alan Pardew’s prolonged chase for a forward to lead the line for the Magpies this season.
The 24-year-old, who scored 45 goals in 158 appearances in Ligue 1, is expected to complete a €6 million deal to St. James’ Park in the near future.
The spending is set to continue after that, too, with the club stepping up their chase of Dutch international Janmaat, according to ITV.
Newcastle have already seen one offer rebuffed by Janmaat’s current club, Feyenoord, but they are unperturbed and are determined to land the man they have identified as Mathieu Debuchy’s replacement. As such, another bid is expected soon.
2) Atletico Madrid join race for Mauricio Isla
Atletico Madrid have joined the hunt for Juventus utility man Mauricio Isla, with Newcastle and Liverpool.
Alan Pardew is hoping to do a deal for the versatile player, who starred at right-back for Chile in the World Cup.
Isla is understood to be available for transfer this summer, with Juve keen to cash-in on the player and it looks like a bidding war could arise.
Newcastle are the definite underdogs out of the hopeful trio, as they cannot offer Isla Champions League football, but Pardew is still optimistic of convincing him to move to Tyneside, according to reports.
3) Sunderland look at Max Clayton
Sunderland have taken highly rated, former Crewe youngster, Max Clayton on trial.
Clayton’s contract at Gresty Road expired this summer and he has been searching for a new club since, with Sunderland looking the favourites to secure his signature.
The 19-year-old has been a regular member of the League One side’s starting line-up for the past few seasons and is another prospect to come off the reputed Crewe production line.
Speaking about the move last week, Crewe boss Steve Davies said: “All I can tell our supporters is that he is currently training with another club [which has now been revealed as Sunderland].
“They have spoken to us and as he is out of contract, he can go where he likes. He is within his rights to do that.
“It will be a type of trial and they will make a decision on him after that.
“They must be keen on him to have a look at him and if he impresses, I am sure they will come back with an offer.
“We are due compensation and hopefully something can be decided between the clubs if it comes to that.”
4) Christian Fuchs is a Sunderland target
According to the Sunderland Echo, Gus Poyet has identified Christian Fuchs as a potential signing for his side this summer.
The Austrian international left-back currently plays for Schalke, but has reportedly been made available for transfer due to his high salary at the German club.
Fuchs would finally put an end to Sunderland’s problematic search for a left-back - with the club struggling to make Marcus Alonso’s move to the Stadium of Light a permanent one for much of the transfer-window so far.
5) Rotherham play down links with Middlesbrough midfielder
Steve Evans has cooled rumours linking his side with Middlesbrough midfielder Richard Smallwood.
The Millers tried to sign Smallwood earlier in the summer, but ‘Boro are understood to be keen to keep hold of the central-midfielder and rejected the offer.
Reports have recently linked Evans’ newly promoted side with rekindling their interest in the 23-year-old, who spent last season on loan at the New York Stadium, but Evans says there is no truth in them.
"We made a bid for Richard Smallwood, but that was seven weeks ago,” he said.
"It was rejected and we then made other plans, so how can he be on our radar now?"
