Louis van Gaal wishes he was at Manchester United already

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal clearly wishes he did not have to hang around for the World Cup third placed play-off.

With a manager as outspoken as Louis van Gaal, it would have been hard to expect him to stay quiet regarding the game which nobody wants to play in.

Holland face Brazil in the World Cup third placed play-off on Saturday, and it is a contest which is even less eagerly anticipated than in previous years.

Brazil are desperate to be anywhere but a football pitch, after their 7-1 humiliation at the hands of Germany, while for Louis van Gaal, it is a match which delays his start at Manchester United even further.

The Dutchman had some stern words for tournament organisers when quizzed about his desire to be a participant in the match.

"I wonder what it's for?", he is quoted in the Italian press.

"It's a pointless game, and I think it should be abolished."

Van Gaal was announced as Manchester United manager in mid-May, but has been unable to start officially because of his role with Holland at the World Cup.

While some fans may have wished for either an early Dutch exit, or Netherlands winning the tournament and finishing on a high, this is the worst of both worlds, with Van Gaal delayed nearly as long as possible with little to show for it.

With Premier League side Arsenal wrapping up the signing of superstar Alexis Sanchez last night, it underlined that there is plenty of work for Van Gaal to do.

The sooner he is allowed to now get back and get on with that, the better for everybody, for there are plenty of Dutch players who would surely rather be heading back home right now too.
