Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey: Manchester City and Chelsea favourites for Premier League title

Emile Heskey believes that Manchester City and Chelsea are the favourites for the Premier League title race, but does not rule out Manchester United.

Liverpool came agonisingly close to winning the Premier League last season, eventually finishing second, two points behind champions Manchester City.

Many have suggested that the Reds will find it even more difficult to challenge for the league title next season, and the club’s former striker Emile Heskey seems to suggest so as well.

‘I think it will be out of Manchester City and Chelsea’, Goal.com quotes the 36-year-old as saying when asked which side he thinks will win the Premier League in 2014-15.

‘They have the strongest squads. Man Utd can't be ruled out, but it will take them time under the new manager Louis Van Gaal’.

Interestingly, Heskey also leaves out Arsenal as contenders for the league title next season.

The Gunners have not won the championship since 2004, and last season their challenge fell apart in the latter stages. At one point, the North London outfit looked that they may not even finish in the top four.

Liverpool had a truly brilliant campaign, but some believe that they overachieved. As good as Brendan Rodgers’ first team was, he did not have the same depth in his squad as the other teams did.

Moreover, with Luis Suarez reportedly on his way to Barcelona, it is only going to make it tougher for the Reds in 2014-15.

Manchester City will probably start as the favourites to retain their league title. Manuel Pellegrini’s side had the best squad last season and have already signed Bacary Sagna, Fernando and Willy Caballero.

Chelsea finished third last season, just two points behind Liverpool, and have strengthened for the upcoming campaign with the recruitments of Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa.

Manchester United have also reinforced their team with the arrivals of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw and, under new manager Louis van Gaal, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

All the clubs are going to make more signings in the summer transfer period, of course, and will make the 2014-15 Premier League title race one of the most competitive in history.
