Could you survive in a world consumed by ash?

Ashen Mountains 1

Ashen is an indie-developed survival game where every character you meet is another player, and where each combat encounter could end in tears.

A friend of mine pointed me in the direction of a Kotaku article about a new indie game called Ashen the other day, and what I saw and read leaves me hopeful. Hopeful because of its concept, as it’s not yet released so I can't get my hands on it (one day, one day!), and hopeful because of its beautiful-looking art. Rock, Paper, Shotgun’s words prompted Kotaku to write about it, and they’re both prompting me to do the same. Ashen just looks and sounds too good to not let you all know about it.

So, what’s it all about? Well, the game’s developers say:

“Ashen is an action RPG about a wanderer in search of a place to call home. There is no sun and the natural light that exists comes from eruptions that cover the land in ash. This is a world where nothing lasts, no matter how tightly you cling to it.

At its core, Ashen is about forging relationships.

Players can choose to guide those they trust to their camp, encouraging them to rest at the fire and perhaps remain. People you meet out in the world will have unique skills and crafting abilities to bolster your chances of survival.

Together, you might just stand a chance.”

The game will feature ‘passive multiplayer’ in which everyone you meet in the world will be another player, so you’ll need to tread carefully and watch who you trust. ‘Non-linear progression’ is here too, meaning that each time you play it’ll be different.

The developers, Aurora44, consist of individuals with experience from working on other indie titles like Gunpoint, to bigger budget games such as Halo 4 and Guild Wars 2. Some members of the team have worked on big triple-A movies like The Hobbit and The Avengers too.

More information on the game can be found on the website and in the press kit, plus you can take a look at some of the gorgeous art for the game below. The art style somewhat reminds me of Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery, but in a beautiful 3D setting – awesome.
